White Knoll Elementary has developed a unique relationship with the University of South Carolina. We are committed to assisting the development of the future teachers who will teach the children and grandchildren of our current students. We have received tremendous benefits from this program which include such things as a lower student/teacher ratio, improved student learning, advanced professional development of staff, and a variety of additional resources directly from the University. Paul Chaplin, a University professor, has worked with our staff in developing morning meetings held daily with teachers and students. A math class at USC has adopted a fourth grade math class at WKE to help strengthen problem solving strategies through writing letters to each other once a week. As a culminating event, the two groups met for an evening of math games and fellowship.

Beginning this school year, 2007-2008 White Knoll Elementary has been selected to be a pilot school with Response to Intervention Initiative. Response to Intervention (RTI) is an emerging approach to the diagnosis of Learning Disabilities that holds considerable promise. In the RTI model, a student with academic delays is given one or more research-validated interventions. The student's academic progress is monitored frequently to see if those interventions are sufficient to help the student to catch up with his or her peers. If the student fails to show significantly improved academic skills despite several well-designed and implemented interventions, this failure to 'respond to intervention' can be viewed as evidence of an underlying Learning Disability.
