White Knoll Elementary has developed a unique relationship with the University of South Carolina. We are committed to assisting the development of the future teachers who will teach the children and grandchildren of our current students. We have received tremendous benefits from this program which include such things as a lower student/teacher ratio, improved student learning, advanced professional development of staff, and a variety of additional resources directly from the University. Megan Burton, a university professor, has worked with our staff in developing lessons to help learn math conceptually. A math class at USC has adopted a fourth grade math class at WKE to help strengthen problem solving strategies through writing letters to each other once a week. As a culminating event, the two groups met for an evening of math games and fellowship. In addition, USC donated Non-Fiction Matters by Stephanie Harvey for our staff to study.
White Knoll Elementary received the Palmetto Silver Award in 2009-2010. We believe our partnership with USC plays a key role in our success.
Beginning in 2010-2011, White Knoll Elementary has been chosen to pilot “21st Century Classroom” in our 5th grade. This program promises five-to-one computing. As part of this pilot, we will be delivering gifted and talented instruction through ELA content. We will be exposing our students to creative problem solving opportunities and leadership study. Our staff development focus for 2010-11 will be Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and the impact these ideas have with elementary students.
