Lake Carolina Elementary was established in 2002 and is located in Richland School District 2. It opened with an enrollment of approximately 350 students and has rapidly grown to a current enrollment of approximately 1040 students plus 20 students in Child Development. We are a stage1, Integrated Thematic Instruction (ITI) school in which teachers use movement, brain exercises, and instructional strategies to enhance the learning environment and promote learning. Currently, we are exploring stage 2, which focuses on the development of curriculum.
Having a widely diverse population, we find that this diversity requires teaching skills that are current and found to be best practices. This requires our school district and school administration to support professional development on a level that cannot be surpassed. Professional development is a priority so that we have a positive impact on student achievement and success.
Through great effort on the part of our administrators, teaching staff, support staff, district staff, parents, and community stakeholders, we have had many opportunities to excel in our brief period of existence. Accomplishments and honors include:
- South Carolina Absolute Report Card Rating of Excellent (and all AYP goals met) from 2002 through 2006;
- Dick and Tunky Riley School Improvement Ccouncil Award Finalist for 2004-05;
- Palmetto Gold Award in 2004, 2005, and 2006;
- Red Carpet Award from the State Department of Education for 2004;
- United Way Humanitarian Award in 2004; and
- Highest student attendance in Richland Two in 2002-03 and 2003-04.
We are a professional community focused on doing what is right for our students; therefore, we cannot “do what we have always done,” but must progressively seek better means in improving student achievement and success. Our philosophy is that we are lifelong learners in a strongly supported collegial atmosphere of caring and responsible professionals.
