Collaborative Research
In the fall of 2005 IES began a partnership with Dr. Diane Stephens, USC Language and Literacy Professor and Instruction and Teacher-Education Department Chair, to design a research study into how reading assessment informs instruction at IES. Irmo Elementary’s inquiry into assessment that informs reading instruction has continued in 2006 and 2007. Vandrea Lang (IES Literacy Coach), Robin Cox, (District Literacy Coach) and Diane Stephens met early in 2006 to collect and analyze reading miscue analysis data that had been submitted by various Irmo Elementary teachers. After analyzing miscue data, the group concluded that a significant need existed at IES for more instruction and study in miscue analysis, running records and Dominie assessment. With support from Robin Cox and Diane Stephens, Vandrea Lang implemented “miscue moments” into each of her SCRI study group sessions. These findings also impacted how Vandrea planned her SCRI study group sessions as a whole. In addition, in June of 2007, Diane Stephens helped School District Five provide advanced study for their new reading interventionists. The new interventionists attended a summer training course taught by Diane Stephens. IES’s reading interventionalist will be visited by Diane this fall as a follow-up to the summer coursework. Diane will also continue to work with Vandrea Lang, Jim Shirley (principal, Irmo Elementary) and Nicole Bishop (USC Liaison at IES) as needed.
Examination and Implementation of the National Network for Educational Renewal's Agenda for Education in a Democracy
During the 2006-2007 school year the faculty at IES participated in a school-wide literature discussion surrounding Peter Johnston’s, Choice Words. Choice Words examines an evolutionary, Democratic learning community and the impact of all language (teacher and student) in and out of the classroom. Teachers and administrators spent a year reading and discussing the text. The concept of a Democratic classroom was one of many concepts explored.
