Guidelines for Nominating an Outstanding SASTE Member
for the John Shrum Award for Excellence
in the Education of Science Teachers

We invite nominations for the annual John Shrum Award for Excellence in the Education of Science Teachers. This annual award was established to honor an SASTE member whose contributions to science education best exemplify the high standards of dedication and service that distinguished this award's namesake, John Shrum.

The John Shrum Award will be presented at the Awards Luncheon on October 11, at the University of South Carolina. The awardee receives a $300 prize.

Guidelines for Nominations

1. Nominations of SASTE members for the award shall be emailed.

2. The length shall not exceed four (4) pages, excluding letters of support, and shall include:

3. The nominee's name, institutional affiliation, address, office and home phone numbers;

4. A brief biographical sketch;

5. A rationale for the nomination, with emphasis on how the nominee has excelled in contributions to the education of science teachers; and

6. A discussion of the impact the nominee's contributions have had on science teachers and science teaching, with emphasis on the relevance to the theme of the 2007 SASTE Conference. Up to four (4) letters of support may be attached.

The candidate will be evaluated on the basis of the information in 4, 5, and 6 above.

Nominations s may be submitted by e-mail to Nate Carnes at ncarnes@sc.edu no later than September 12, 2008. The nomination attachments should be in Word (doc) or rich text format (rtf). Please include "JOHN SHRUM AWARD NOMINATION" in the subject line.
