Select the degree program for which you are applying:
5th-Year Master of Teaching (M.T.) program in Secondary Education (This program is for initial teacher certification - must have taken appropriate undergraduate education courses at USC-Columbia and all other undergraduate program requirements)
Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Secondary Education (This program is for initial teacher certification for non-5th year students)
Master of Education in Teaching (M.Ed.) This degree program is designed to provide advanced professional studies in graduate course work for persons who currently hold teacher certification and who are committed to excellence in grades 2-12 teaching. (Not for initial teacher certification)
Interdisciplinary Master of Arts (I.M.A.) in Secondary Education (Not for initial teacher certification)
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Secondary Education (Not for initial teacher certification)
To apply to the M.A.T program in Secondary Education, choose the area in which you are seeking certification:
English – Mathematics – Science (with options in Biology – Chemistry – Natural Sciences – Physics) – Social Studies
To apply to the M.A.T. program in Business you must:
1. Print and read all information in the MAT General Advisement Guide and Student Guide.
2. Complete the on-line Graduate School application. Indicate on the application the particular M.A.T. program in which you wish to enroll.
3. Submit 2 letters of recommendation to the Graduate School (USC Graduate School, 901 Sumter St. #304, Columbia, SC 29208). Page down for Letter of Recommendation in PDF or Word format.
4. Submit scores on either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test to the Graduate School.
5. Submit official transcripts reflecting undergraduate degree and any graduate work to the Graduate School.
6. Check with a representative from area to which you are applying for any additional requirements.
To apply to the M.A.T. program in English, Mathematics, or Sciences (with options in Biology, Chemistry, or Science) you must:
1. Print and read all information in the MAT General Advisement Guide and Student Guide.
2. Complete the on-line Graduate School application. Indicate on the application the particular M.A.T. program in which you wish to enroll.
3. Submit 2 letters of recommendation to the Graduate School (USC Graduate School, 901 Sumter St. #304, Columbia, SC 29208). Page down for Letter of Recommendation in PDF or Word format.
4. Submit scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) to the Graduate School.
5. Submit official transcripts reflecting undergraduate degree and any graduate work to the Graduate School.
6. Check with a representative from the area to which you are applying for any additional requirements (i.e. letter of intent).
To apply to the M.A.T. program in Secondary Social Studies (with an option in Social Studies, Geography, or History), you must:
1. Print and read the information in the MAT - Social Studies information packet, MAT General Advisement Guide, and Student Guide.
2. Complete the MAT - Social Studies application supplement. This can be completed with Adobe® Acrobat® Reader™ 4.0 or higher. Print the completed form and send to the College of Education, Office of Student Affairs.
3. Complete the on-line Graduate School application. This application is submitted electronically to the Graduate School.
4. Submit 2 letters of recommendation to the Graduate School (USC Graduate School, 901 Sumter St. #304, Columbia, SC 29208). Page down for Letter of Recommendation in PDF or Word format.
5. Submit scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
6. Submit official transcripts reflecting undergraduate degree and any graduate work to the Graduate School.
7. All other requirements are outlined in the information packet listed above.
5th-Year M.T. program in Secondary Education
Note: These application instructions are for students applying to the last year of the program. If you are going to be an entering freshman or transferring in as an undergraduate, apply through Undergraduate Admissions.

MT Foreign Language applicants should contact the Office of Student Affairs (Wardlaw 113) for application material. M.T. in Spanish, French, and Latin is only open to students who enrolled in USC as undergraduates prior to Summer 2005.
To apply to the Ph.D. in Secondary Education, you must:
1. Complete the on-line Graduate School application.
2. Visit the admissions criteria listed on the Secondary Education page: http://www.ite.sc.edu/ite/DocSecPhD.html
To apply to the I.M.A. in Science (with an option in biology, chemistry, earth science, natural science, or physics), you must:
1. Print and read all information in the I.M.A General Advisement Guide.
2. Complete the on-line Graduate School application. Indicate on the application the particular degree program in which you wish to enroll.
3. Submit 2 letters of recommendation to the Graduate School (USC Graduate School, 901 Sumter St. #304, Columbia, SC 29208). Page down for Letter of Recommendation in PDF or Word format.
4. Submit scores on either the Graduate Record Examination or the Miller Analogies Test to the Graduate School. Some areas do not accept the Miller (contact your area regarding test requirements).
5. Submit official transcripts reflecting undergraduate degree and any graduate work to the Graduate School.
6. Check with a representative from area to which you are applying for any additional requirements.
