Pickleball Workshop Held for PE Majors

The Physical Education Department hosted a Pickleball Workshop on Friday, February 29, 2008. The workshop was led by Michael Cathey and Stephanie Little, Graduate Assistants in Physical Education Pedagogy. The workshop was designed for students majoring in Physical Education and focused on skills and strategies related to the game of pickleball.

Pickleball is a sport described as a combination of ping-pong, tennis, and badminton. It uses a simplified combination of tennis rules and strategies. Because of this, it is an appropriate lead-up activity to playing tennis. Pickleball is played in schools, parks and recreation centers, camps, and retirement communities mostly in North America. The game can be played in smaller spaces using any hard surface. It is also used at the middle school level for South Carolina 's Physical Education Assessment Program (SCPEAP).

Tips for future teaching of the game were given in efforts to provide Physical Education majors with content knowledge above and beyond what they receive through taking activity courses in the program. The workshop was well-attended and students received a large resource packet upon completion. Because of the success of the workshop, other games are being considered for coverage through workshops in the future.

Department of Physical Education to Offer a Course on Sailing

Beginning in March, Captain Bryan Adams will offer a six-week course on sailing (PEDU 555U). Broken into six four-hour sections, students will learn terminology in the classroom and then learn rigging, docking, to tack and jibe, maneuver in heavy weather on Lake Murray, leading to US Sailing Certification. The cost of the course requires an additional $400 fee (in addition to tuition for a one credit course for USC credit). The course is designed for students who have never set foot on a sailboat and is the newest addition to a growing activity program designed to get the USC community up and moving.

For more information on the sailing course:

Mensch and Mitchell Publish Article on Career Choice in Athletic Training

Jim Mensch and Murray Mitchell in Physical Education have published the article, “Choosing a Career in Athletic Training: Exploring the Perceptions of Potential Recruits” in the Journal of Athletic Training, 43(1), 70-79.

The success of any academic program depends upon attracting and keeping quality students. Understanding recruit perceptions of a career is important. In this study, undergraduate students intending to apply to the program (n=23) and students aware of but not interested in pursuing this career (n=23) were interviewed. Main attractors to the profession appear to be related to experiences with high school athletic trainers and the potential relationship with sports and the feeling of being part of a team. The main barrier is the perception of too great of a demand on personal time. Implications for future recruiting efforts and research directions are discussed.
