The MAT degree is designed for students who are seeking certification
to teach physical education and who already possess an undergraduate
degree. Students who wish to gain teacher certification with
undergraduate degrees in fields other than physical education,
exercise science, or kinesiology will have to complete required
undergraduate pre-requisites. The program requires two years
of full time study culminating with a graduate level student
teaching experience in the second year of the program. Students
must complete graduate and undergraduate coursework for teacher
certification. Students must pass a comprehensive examination
at the end of their program. A more specific list of required
courses is listed below.
Admission
Students seeking admission to the MAT program must submit
an official application for admission to the USC Graduate
School. Students may apply online at www.sc.edu and go to
Graduate School for online admission procedures. Students
seeking admission to the MAT program must provide the following
information to the USC Graduate School:
1. A complete application forwarded to the USC Graduate School.
2. Transcripts from every institution of higher education
that you have attended.
3. A cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.5 or
greater.
4. A minimum score of 35 on the Miller Analogy test or scores
of 400 on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate
Record Examination.
5. Two positive letters of recommendation.
6. A written statement of professional intentions or aspirations.
Full admission can not be obtained unless all admission requirements
are met. Therefore, it is important that students seeking
admission begin the application process early and submit all
required information in a timely fashion. Information regarding
local administration of the Graduate Record Exam and Miller
Analogy Test can be obtained from the USC Graduate School.
Both tests are now available in computerized formats. Although
the test taker may receive their scores immediately after
the test, it may take several weeks for the official test
scores to arrive to the USC Graduate School. Thus, students
are encouraged to take these exams as early as possible.
