Purchasing Annual SAS or SPSS Licenses

Annual licenses for the statistical analysis programs SAS and SPSS are available for University-owned or -leased computers through USC Software Distribution. (Student licenses, which are good for six months, are also available.)

Please note that you need to purchase one license for each computer you will install it on and the license will expire at the end of the summer (or at the end of the student license.) You will begin to get notices that it will expire beginning 30 days prior to the date.

USC Software Distribution - The new USC Software Distribution system for purchasing licenses and/or CDs works through VIP .

The person who is authorized to spend money from the account should use his/her VIP account. If the total is over $100 you should be prompted to print out the request, have it signed by the authorized person, and then fax it to USC Software Distribution (at 777-2626.)

1. Log in to VIP and go to the Technology area.
2. Choose [Show Me] Software Distribution and find the title you want.

Notice that some items, such as Adobe Acrobat Professional, offer the license and the CD separately. The COE 's Information Technology office purchases CDs for the current versions of these programs, so you only need to purchase the license. When you have done this, complete an IT Work Order at http://www.ed.sc.edu/oit/workorder/OITWorkorder.asp

3. Follow the directions to submit your request.

Additional information can be obtained from USC Software Distribution's web site at http://www.sc.edu/software/ or by calling 777-4657.

Learning to Use the Program

Assistance using SPSS and SAS is not always available in the Training Center because most of the Instructional Support trainers have not used these programs. In the past, assistance was provided by employees of the College of Education 's Office of Program Evaluation (http://ope.ed.sc.edu or 803-777-1246.)

There is a classroom set of SPSS in one of the Training Center classrooms. Both SAS and SPSS are also installed in the Workroom in Wardlaw 274-F and on one of the presentation laptops that can be reserved for instruction through the Faculty Checkout System. For information about the classrooms and software in these rooms, please go to the Tour [ http://www.ed.sc.edu.ois ] in the About Us area of the Instructional Support website. To reserve one of these rooms or presentation laptops, please use either the Reserve a Room or Reserve Equipment area of the Instructional Support Request Form [ http://www.ed.sc.edu/ois/instructionSupport.asp]. To reserve a computer in the Workroom in Wardlaw 274-F, please call 803-777-4475.

Online resources for both programs can be found on the Instructional Support A few online resources for learning to use Acrobat Professional and the free Adobe Reader can be found on the Instructional Support Training Materials page at http://www.ed.sc.edu/ois/howtoguides/software_programs.asp.
