Conference Strands

The strands below refl ect an effort to incorporate the work of the NNER at an important crossroads of American
public schooling. With the recent change in administration, new policy directions which will impact the future of public schooling and our social and political democracy are being debated. NNER members need to fi nd a voice in this political dialogue. The strands below encourage us to take a look at the progress we have made in “Realizing the Democratic Ideal” in various contexts. We refer to these as “dimensions of democracy.”

The 2010 NNER Annual Conference will give us an opportunity for a focused dialogue around the following
themes:

1) Practicing democracy in the classroom

The challenge of practicing democracy in the classroom has never been greater. With the increasing diversity of learners and the changing social contexts where schools are housed, providing a nurturing and equitable education to everyone is more diffi cult than ever. In spite of the challenges, however, we know that public schools are the one place where all citizens can learn about and experience democratic interactions and processes.

Public schools are also the one place where society can ensure that all students are provided with the knowledge and skills to enable them to become contributing members of our social and political democracy. The role of the teacher has never been more important than it is today. Presentations in this theme may address examples of promising practices that foster democracy in the classroom. They may speak to ways that teachers and schools address issues of equity, social justice and access in their contexts. Finally, they may speak to ways that the Agenda for Education in a Democracy can fi nd its way into P-12 public schools.

2) Engaging the wider community

Broad participation is an important element of democracy. The NNER has long encouraged the simultaneous renewal of Colleges of Education, Colleges of Arts and Sciences and P-12 schools to better educate teachers and public school students. Although this tripartite is essential to the full development of all learners, it has been missing an important ally. The involvement of communities in the nurturing and development of their own children has taken on a greater role in schooling. Presentations in this theme might illustrate examples of community involvement in the educational process. They may provide insight into strategies to make connections with community members, partners and agencies. Finally, they might provide models for NNER partnership settings to expand further into their own community resources.

3) Creating citizens of the world

Now that the NNER is an international organization, it is a good time to initiate the conversation about expanding the Agenda for Democracy on a global scale. Democratic character is not only important to develop in our nations’ youth, it is important to consider on an international level. This theme allows for the conversation about “Realizing the Democratic Ideal” for all of the worlds’ children. Presentations might illustrate examples of international partnerships that are seeking to foster democratic practices. They may also offer comparative insight into international schooling. Finally, presentations might consider the role of the NNER as an organization which might provide international connectivity.

4) Considering the implications of policy decisions

Some of the policy considerations in the new administrative transition have high stakes implications for public schools. “Race to the Top” and other policies call for increased accountability for public schools and institutions of higher education. The NNER and its membership settings need to be involved in these conversations. Presentations in this theme might address the impact of some of the policies that are being considered and/or implemented by the new administration. Presentations might also illustrate ways in which policy decisions are being addressed by membership sites. Finally, presentations might consider the role of the NNER in advocating for certain policies.
