Each summer, outstanding teachers from the Midlands are invited to attend The Midlands Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute. In an intensive four-week session paid for by school districts and project grant support, the teachers share their expertise, study and discuss the teaching of writing, and work to develop as writers themselves.

Graduates of the institute become National Writing Project Teacher Consultants, meeting throughout the year to continue conversations begun during the summer. In addition, the Teacher Consultants become teacher leaders, providing in-service programs in their schools and districts throughout the Midlands and publishing books and articles about the teaching of writing.

Admission to the Invitational Summer Institute is based on an application and interview. We welcome applicants from all grade levels, content areas, and professional settings. Application materials are available through district offices or can be obtained by contacting MWP directly. Districts are generally expected to fund a teacher's participation in the institute; however, a few scholarships are available each year.
