Noche de Cuentos

With the growth of the Latino population comes the critical need for mentorship and research as we begin the process of understanding the richness and variety within the Latino culture. This conference will provide a forum for current research on the education and information needs of Latino children, their families and Latino children’s literature’s social influences on children of all ages.

Award-winning Latina author/artist/illustrator Maya Christina Gonzalez and artist Irania Patterson will headline the preconference on Friday, April 24th.

Friday evening, April 24th, award-winning storyteller/author/illustrator Lulu Delacre will highlight our theme of Connecting Cultures and Celebrating Cuentos during a Noche de Cuentos, a storytelling and family event at 7pm, at Horrell Hill Elementary School in the Richland One School District.   Join us as we celebrate El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day) in an exciting family evening with gentle games for the little ones, a story for the older ones, and game-songs for the entire family.

The full conference begins the following day, Saturday, April 25th, at the Moore School of Business, located on the beautiful campus of the University of South Carolina.  Dr. Sonia Nieto will deliver the opening Keynote address.  Breakout sessions on Latino children’s literature and literacy will follow and will be of interest to researchers and practitioners, as well as undergraduate and graduate students.  Research posters and other artwork created by undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Education and School of Library and Information Science will be on display throughout the conference.

During our luncheon, celebrated Latina author Maya Christina Gonzalez will engage conference attendees in a Keynote.  This luncheon will be followed by afternoon breakout sessions. The conference will close with a grand finale performance by Lulu Delacre and Lucia Gonzalez which will focus on their book, the Storyteller’s Candle/La velita de los cuentos (2008).

As a conference participant you will learn ways to connect cultures and celebrate cuentos with Latino and non-Latino children and families.  We invite you to join us as we strive to deepen our understanding of the Latino cultures and learn ways to celebrate their rich diversity within our classrooms and libraries.

See you in April!
