Berlioz Historical Brass

Twelfth Night and the Columbia Museum of Art

In 2001, a group of early musicians came together to form the Hawley Consort and to stage a 12th Night music concert in Columbia.  After a number of years, this ensemble, now known as the Arlecchino Consort, returned to Columbia to perform Twelfth Night: An Italian Festival, January 14, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. (with a pre-concert lecture at 2:30 p.m.) at the Columbia Museum of Art. While the concert was well attended and received, the ensemble is postponing further 12th Night performances.

The Mellstock Band

After participating in a New England tour with the Mellstock Band in 1994 and joining the ensemble’s director, Dave Townsend, at the 1997 Sidmouth Folk Music Festival, I  organized a 1998 tour of the Carolinas for the Mellstock Band. The 10 day tour culminated with a three day festival at the Columbia Museum of Art consisting of two concerts, "Music from the Time of Thomas Hardy" and "Folk Music of England’s West Country," and a day-long West Gallery Music Workshop.

The Tigers

I have served as a grants writer and CD producer for an African-American shout band from Charlotte, NC. I have coordinated the preparation of text, the design process, CD production, and grants writing and reporting activities of this ensemble. Our project resulted in the recording, Make a Joyful Noise: Sound that Shout Band Brass. I have worked with Kenny Carr in the University of South Carolina Bicentennial program, Carolina Shout, and continue to assist the group whenever possible.

The Serpent

Since 1986, I am been actively involved in the resurgence of interest in the serpent, a bass, woodwind, musical instrument of the late 16th through 20th centuries.  I have served as founder and president of US, United Serpents, director of the international serpent festivals at the Amherst Early Music Festival in 1986 and the University of South Carolina in 1989.  In what has proven to be one of the most rewarding aspects of my career, I have worked alongside Christopher Monk, assisted Clifford Bevan, and befriended Douglas Yeo, all part of the wonderful adventures of the serpent.

Columnist, TUBA Journal

Since 1993, I have served as the editor and columnist for the Historical Instrument Section of the TUBA Journal. Presently, I submit one column annually that attends in some way to research and activities related to the serpent. I edit and coordinate essays of the other themes of the Historical Instrument Section–museum, ophicleide, and tuba archives. These essays are submitted by Dr. Arnold Myers of Scotland, Dr. Clifford Bevan and Mr. Anthony George of England, and Dr. Ronald Davis of the United States, respectively.
