Core Courses
  • EDTE J710 "Developing as a Professional Educator" (Syllabus
  • The goal of this course is to broaden and enhance the professional educator’s knowledge base and leadership skills in the teaching profession. The objectives include exposing in-service teachers to current research and best practices and providing research activities that help them reflect on teaching as a complex profession with many facets.  This course guides professional teachers in their own professional development and helps them develop awareness related to the needs of students and other professionals in the school.  EDTE J710 helps the professional teacher to understand the culture and climate of individual schools, to respond more effectively to parents and  community concerns, to expand their consideration of the local ( and global) environment, and to define ways that each teacher might use his/her unique talents to contribute to the overall profession of teaching.

  • EDTE J711 "Ideas and Issues in Teaching" (Syllabus)
  • Participants in this course will engage in critical explorations of current and classic educational theory in relation to issues and ideas that drive practice in public schools. Participants will make connections between theoretical understandings and their own emergence as professional educators with a particular emphasis on cross-cultural perspectives, the sociopolitical contexts in which learning and teaching occur, and implications for teaching and learning in public school classrooms. This course engages participants in a collaborative process of exploring, and ultimately participating in, the transformation of our selves, our schools, and our society. Within the context of a safe, mutually supportive, collaborative community, participants will develop skills in self-examination and self-critique, critical thinking and inquiry, and complex social problem-solving, preparing them to be more effective agents of education change.

  • EDTE J712 "Introduction to Action Research" (Syllabus)

Participants in this course will explore action research in theory and practice in relation to teaching in public schools by examining core concepts from action research literature in their field.  One of the goals of this course will be to challenge teachers’ views themselves, not as consumers of someone else’s knowledge, but as producers of their own  knowledge about their teaching and about the learning of their diverse students.  Participants will keep an action-research journal of observations in their educational settings to identify a tension in their practice.  Participants will reflect on the ethics of action research and participate in a research community as they grow in their understanding of action research. This class will serve as a foundation for EDTE 713.

  • EDTE J713 "Action Research Capstone Seminar" (Syllabus)

Participants in this course will engage in action research and will participate in a forum for the analysis of and reflection on an action research project that each has conducted. Participants will make connections between their theoretical understandings of research and their emergence as action researchers in educational settings.  Participants will continue an exploration of action research that began in EDTE J712 and will conduct a study to better understand the research question/s they generated in EDTE J712.  Participants will participate in a research community as they reflect on the research process and the research processes of colleagues in this course and discuss the challenges and celebrations inherent in conducting research in schools. Participants will develop a comprehensive report of an action research project and present the results of action research project locally and to a larger community.
