Policies and Procedures for the ITE Curriculum Committee

The ITE Curriculum Committee operates using the following procedures and policies.   This committee is charged in the ITE By-laws to review and make recommendations regarding new programs, new courses, and other substantive changes to ITE degree programs.  A complete description of the curriculum change process from a college-wide perspective can be found at the http://www.ed.sc.edu/facinfo/CourseChngs/steps.asp

1.      All changes to the USC Bulletin originate within each of the five ITE program areas.  Curriculum changes involving the USC Bulletin require a sequence departmental, college, university committee reviews and approvals.  Non-Bulletin changes are within the governance of the program faculty.

2.      For any Bulletin change, program faculty will prepare the appropriate Undergraduate Bulletin change or Graduate Bulletin change forms.    The forms will be assembled into a “packet” that includes (a) COE cover/tracking form, (b) appropriate Action Request Form, (c) appropriate Change Proposal form, (d) justification, if not on form, (e) supporting documents such as course syllabus, two-column Bulletin change form, and memo/letter/email of concurrence from other units that might be affected.  The packet is reviewed and considered for approval by the program faculty.  It is important that the faculty member listed as “contact person” be available and attend each committee meeting during which the proposal is being reviewed.  Failure to attend delays the approval process.

3.      The program coordinator will submit the approved packet to the ITE Department Chair who will maintain the originals, track the approvals, and submit a copy of the packet to the ITE Curriculum Committee chair for review at the next meeting.  Packets must arrive at least one week before the scheduled meeting for review.

4.      ITE Curriculum Committee Chair will schedule monthly meetings throughout the academic year.  Meetings may be cancelled one week in advance if no proposals are submitted for review.  The committee chair will determine whether committee members need to review hard copy of proposal packets.   If hard copy is required, each committee member will be provided with a copy several days before the scheduled meeting.  Upon approval, the committee chair will submit the approved packet with signature on the cover sheet to the ITE Department Chair.

5.      ITE faculty will vote approval at the ITE Faculty meeting as part of Curriculum Committee report.  The Department Chair will ensure that copies of packet are provided to faculty with sufficient time for review prior to the ITE Faculty Meeting.

6.      The ITE Department Chair will submit the approved packet to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs who will channel the materials to the appropriate College of Education curriculum committee (changes to undergraduate and graduate initial certification curriculum as well as any undergraduate courses will go to Basic Programs Governance and changes to in-service and graduate curriculum will on to Advanced Programs Governance).

7.      The College committees will forward the approved packet with required copies to either Faculty Senate or the Graduate Council.
