Dual Employment - Provost Guidelines

Included with all requests for dual employment must be a separate memorandum from the respective department chair - in consultation with the faculty member seeking dual employment - describing the hours expected in normal duty performance as well as the hours expected in fulfillment of the additional duties.

For example, "Professor X plans to accomplish the additional duties in two-hour periods during evening hours, three days a week. During the semester in which the extra duties are planned, Professor X will teach two daytime courses (insert the daily schedule). Professor X maintains an active research program, and will satisfy all service obligations (list primary service commitments)."

In essence, the memorandum must demonstrate that the dual employment duties are clearly in addition to, and not in lieu of, time spent in the routine fulfillment of Professor X's responsibilities.

In the same memorandum, an assessment from the faculty member's most recent annual review must be provided. That assessment must indicate that the faculty member's performance in each category (teaching, research, and service) is at least satisfactory.

A statement must be provided that explains why the additional duties are not implicit in the employee's normally-expected responsibilities.
