William H. Brown earned a doctorate in 1985 from George Peabody College for Teachers of Vanderbilt University. He joined the faculty at the University of South Carolina (USC) in 1995. In addition to his work in the Department of Educational Studies in the USC College of Education, he was an inaugural member of the USC Research Consortium on Children and Families and is a member of an interdisciplinary research team, the Children’s Physical Activity Research Group, at the USC Arnold School of Public Health. Previously, he held positions at Vanderbilt University as a Research Assistant Professor, Assistant Director for Outreach Activities at the John F. Kennedy Center for Research in Human Development, and Director of the Susan Gray School for Children.

Throughout his career, Dr. Brown has held professional positions as a preschool teacher, service coordinator with families, director of an early intervention program for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with and without disabilities, teacher educator, researcher, and child advocate. In 1993, he received the Professional of the Year Award by the Tennessee Association for Retarded Citizens (The Arc of Tennessee). In 2002, he received the Partner in Education Award for the Child Development Programs in Richland School District Two in Columbia, South Carolina, and he received the 2007 College of Education Research Award at USC. In 2010, he became a South Carolina Education Policy Fellow, which is a state fellowship affiliated with the Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL) in Washington, DC.

Dr. Brown has written multiple articles and chapters about services, practices, and policies for young children and their families and has been co-editor of Inclusion of Preschool Children with Developmental Delays in Early Childhood Programs (with Maureen Conroy, 1997) and co-editor of Social Competence of Young Children: Risk, Disability, and Evidence-Based Practices (2nd ed.) (with Samuel L. Odom and Scott R. McConnell, 2008). He also has served as an associate editor (2002-2007) and editor (2007-2010) of the Journal of Early Intervention and has been an editorial board member for Topics in Early Childhood Special Education, Early Childhood Research Quarterly, and Assessment for Effective Intervention.

Dr. Brown’s professional interests include (a) community-based services and supports for young children, (b) young children’s physical activity, (c) young children’s social competence, (d) preschool inclusion, and (e) professional development in early childhood education and early childhood special education.
