Counselor Education Program Hosted Fall Conference

Date Entered:
1/11/2010

The Counselor Education Program in partnership with the South Carolina Association of Black Psychologists hosted a fall Black graduate student professional conference, “Lifting as We Climb: Preparing Our Future Practitioners and Scholars for Excellence”. The purpose of the conference was to provide a culturally enriching and liberating educational experience for our future psychologists, counselors, and other behavioral health professionals who are passionate about addressing the needs of the Black community. Workshops during this half-day conference were specifically designed to address the concerns of Black graduate students and others with an interest in graduate studies. Over 50 undergraduate and graduate counseling, psychology, public health, and social work students attended from Allen University, Benedict College, South Carolina State, Webster University, and the University of South Carolina. Conference session topics included, “Giving Voice and Validation to Student Concerns: How Can We Help You?”, “Tips for Increasing Your Financial Literacy”, “Successfully Navigating through Politics in Your Program”, and “Surviving and Thriving in Graduate School: Lessons from New Scholars”. Dr. Catherine Packer-Williams served as conference coordinator.

Fulbright Scholars

Date Entered:

12/6/2012

Kara Brown, an associate professor in Educational Studies, joins Jeff Persels in advising students on their Fulbright applications this year. Brown, a Fulbright winner herself, took on the challenge of advising students applying for the English Teaching Assistantship Fulbright grants, a time intensive but rewarding process.

“The Fulbright is such an amazing opportunity. If you’re invested at all in helping to expand opportunities abroad for undergraduates and graduates, and that is one of my commitments here at USC, then this is a natural fit,” Brown said.

Brown said she would like to get more former Fulbright faculty members connected with students who are interested in applying for the grant and to become a systematic resource at the university.
