Making a Web Toolbox with MS Word.

Pre-requisite skills:

  • Can copy and paste URL address from Web Browser to Word document.

  • Can copy and paste text from Web page to Word document.

screen capture of Word table tool

    1. Open Web browser and MS Word.
    2. Type the title of your Web Toolbox.
    3. Skip a few lines and now create a table.
    4. From the Table Menu — Select Insert Table Create a table with 3 Columns and 3 Rows. Label your Columns.

    5. Name of Web Page

      URL Address

      Notes/Annotations

    6. Now you are ready to add Web addresses and notes. Use your Toolbox table each time you browse the web and you will have a complete toolbox on different topics.
    7. When you locate a page that you want to add to the toolbox, just copy the title of the page, multitask to the MSWord document and then Paste into the appropriate column in your toolbox. Return to your browser window, copy web address. Multitask back to Word, then paste the web address. Do this for accuracy. Incorrectly typed web addresses will not hyperlink properly. After you paste in the address, either press Enter/Return or the Spacebar. Word will then make the web address an active hyperlink.
    8. Your finished toolbox should look like this example for Virtual Zoos.

    Educators Toolbox:
    Virtual Zoos

    Name of Web Page

    URL address

    Notes/ Annotation

Birmingham Zoo http://www.bhm.tis.net/zoo Animal movies and an African Safari
Cinncinati Zoo http://www.cincyzoo.org Visit the animals or the Botanical Gardens
National Zoo http://natzoo.si.edu Highlights, zoo views, and animal photos.

Remember that when using MS word the links become active hyperlinks only when you press RETURN/ENTER or SPACEBAR after each one. The hyperlink will not become active until you press return. If you do not like the way a web address is formatted you can reformat your table column width. Typically you will need more room for the web address and notes than the title. When you run out of rows you only need to press TAB and you will automatically create another row. Make a mistake and you can delete a row using the feature under the Table menu. Add style, word art, and pictures as desired. Now you or your students can use this word document to link directly to sites on the web. Please note that your final product will not be a WEB PAGE but a WORD document that will allow students to link directly to Web pages from MS Word. No active server or knowledge of Web programming is needed.
