The Internet


Target Audience: The following lesson is designed to motivate a class of 22 third grade students to want to learn more about their government.


I.Objective: 1- Students will use Netscape to answer questions about the White House and the First Family.

2- Students will use conflict resolution skills to work in cooperative learning groups of two.

3- Students will gain interest in their government.

II. Materials Needed: Slip or ppp connector, 11 MAC computers with Netscape loaded on them, worksheet on the White House and the First Family, pencils, etc..

III. Time Required: 1 hour lesson

IV. Preskills Needed: Knowledge of MACs and Netscape, and conflict resolution skills.

V. Procedures:

A. Set: The teacher will state that the class has used Netscape before to locate information about other units of study. The teacher will then state that the class will use Netscape today to learn more about their government . Today's focus will be on The White House and the First Family.

B. Lesson: Student pairs will access the White House to take a tour and learn more about the First Family. Students will use information gathered from Netscape to complete a given worksheet. The worksheet will have questions such as:

A. The White House

1. What does the furniture in The White House look like?

2. Describe any pictures you see on the walls of the White House.

3. Name 2 ways The White House is different from your house.

Why do you think they are different?

4. What do you think it would be like to live in The White House?

B. The First Family

1. Who are the members of the First Family?

2. Write a sentence about each member of the First Family.

3. Would you want to be the son / daughter of the president? Why or why not?

C. President

1. What is the president's job?

2. Would you like to be president one day? Why or why not?

C. Summarizing Activities: The teacher will state that we used Netscape to learn more about our national government. In the following weeks we will be using Internet, our social studies text, and other resources to learn more about our state's government. We will take a tour of the governor's mansion , learn about the governor and his family, and explore the different components that make up our state government.

D. Extension Activities: 1- Student pairs will write a list of things they would like to learn about our state government.

2- Student pairs will share their work with the class.
