Lesson Themes: Science: Discovering Sharks.
*Using iformation from the lesson, the students will incorporate some basic information regarding ocean life and ecological conservation into their "earth watch" lives.

Target Audience: Elementary (5th-6th grade)

Objectives:

TSWBAT list five different species of shark.
TSWBAT list ten interesting facts regarding sharks.
TSWBAT discuss the habitat and geographical location for the various chosen species.
TSWBAT write a report that incorporates the various learned facts.

Instructional Materials:

Sumeria(CD-ROM): Micronesia Ocean Life
Grolier Incorporated(CD-ROM): The New Grolier Electronic Encyclopedia.
Aldus (3.5" Disk): Art Explorer
Voyager (Laser Disk) : A World Alive
Word Perfect (3.5" Disk)

2.The instructor will then give a presentation on how to operate the chosen software programs.
3. Cooperative Learning Groups:
a. Number of Students/Groups: Five groups of three students
4. Number of Stations: 6
a. The first four stations will be information gathering stations.
*The students will be expected to gather the appropriate information from the first four
stations (A World Alive, Ocean Life, The New Grolier Electronic Encyclopedia, W.W.W,
various reference material previously obtained from library).
b.The fifth station will be a writing station.
* After they are finished with the information gathering stage they will move to the writing stage. While one group is working on writing their report, the other groups will be working cooperatively to discuss the layout of their report.
c. The sixth station will be a graphic station.
*Finally, the students will have the opportunity to create a graphic display to accompany their report.

4.The students will have the opportunity to orally present their report to the class.

5.The instructor may wish to create a bulletin board to display the student's work.

Pre-requisite skills:
Students will be able to work in small cooperative groups.
Students will be able to use a mouse/computer.
Students will be able to use basic word processing system used in classroom.
Students will have a working knowledge of the various chosen programs.

Assessment: (Each student will be given a rating scale that has each question stated explicitly, with a rating from 1-5).
1.Each student will do a self evaluation regarding how they felt they did as an active participant in each group.

2.Each student will give their group a rating regarding working together as a whole.

3.Each student will rate their group's project as a whole.

4.The instructor will rate each project on the specific objectives assigned to each group.

Classroom management:
The instructor will help assign roles for individuals within groups, if the roles do not naturally evolve. The instructor will be on hand to help with any technical problems or questions. The instructor will keep track of the time, and let the students know when they have five minutes before they are to move to the next station.
