Prevention Primer - reference tool for the teacher that summarizes issues about drugs and strategies for drug prevention.
1 Mac and LCD projection device

Pre-requisite Skills:
Students will be able to work in cooperative groups.
Students will be able to use mouse.
Teacher will have instructional materials ready.

Gaining Attention: Teacher will bring in an article about recent drug bust in the paper. Teacher will give students the opportunity to discuss this.

Objectives: Teacher will inform students of the activity stating that they will have to work in cooperative groups. The teacher will briefly go over the rules for the cooperative groups, assign groups, give each member of the group a job such as manager, reader, and recorder. Each group will then brainstorm for the group name.

Instruction: Teacher will first go over terms found in the software curriculum guide and the Prevention Primer and have the students work on a crossword puzzle in their cooperative groups. The puzzle and other activites are in the curriculm guide. Next, the students will be given the opportunity to run the software. The teacher will model the process first, check for understanding, then let the groups take turns prioritizing goals in the software program.

Providing feedback: The computer provides the groups feedback on the goals and presents the consequences. The teacher will offer students help in dealing with the consequences, and encourage group discussion.

Enhancing Transfer: The students will be asked to role play situations.

Enhancing Transfer: The students will work on an anti-drug poster using a paint and poster program. The posters will be displayed in the school hallways during anti-drug week at school.

Enhancing Transfer: Students will receive extra credit for joining SADD.

Assessment: Teacher will observe student interaction and make sure everyone is participating. All seat work will go in folders at the end of the day to be checked.

Time considerations: This unit will be done during a week's time. At the end of the week each student will present their skit or story and poster to the class. Group members will have a variety of fun activities to do while other groups work on the computer. If the seatwork is completed before the class period ends, then the students can work on skits and poster ideas. All work will be done in groups. Each group will submit a group portfolio at the end of the week. Individual contributions will be noted by students, but there will be only one grade for each group. Students will be encouraged to handle conflicts within the group before going to the teacher for assistance.
