MADELINE HUNTER Activity PLAN
Example Provided for EDEX 750 Technology for Special Populations

Objective: What the students will be able to do upon completion of the lesson.

Using the rule and writing software, students will edit a short story by replacing underlined common nouns with a proper noun : A proper noun is the name for a particular person, place, or thing. All proper nouns begin with a capital letter. (Write on the board)

Anticipatory Set (Multiple means of engagement): Relate lesson to everyday life or situation students may encounter. Discuss the importance in knowing the correct way to write especially in general education classes. Discuss the use of proper nouns to make writing more specific and descriptive.

Materials Needed: Teacher demonstration - use of board
Teacher demonstration - computer with projection, smartboard, large monitor
Computer available for individual students or schedule for students to use selected computers in the classroom to complete activity
Word processing software with paragraph prepared.

Prerequisite Skills: Prior teaching and learning
Students have had individual practice with each common nouns and types of proper nouns.
Students have had prior practice with the word processor and saving documents under a new name.

UDL Considerations: What do you have in place so that this activity can meet the needs of all learners.

Classroom organization:
Teacher presents lesson using computer and overhead projection device.
Students complete the activity using individual computers or are provided a schedule for rotation use of available computers.

Delivering Instruction/Model and Lead- Multiple Means of Presentation

Procedures- Initial Instruction:

The teacher will:

1. Review examples and not-examples of proper and common nouns.

2.Using Kidworks, KidPix, StoryBook Weaver, Word, Open Office, WYNN, or other program, Demonstrate a story with common nouns and show how to change to proper nouns.

3. Demonstrate functions of the word processor that allows one to highlight and then retype the word.

4. Show how to use the word processor function to capitalize the proper nouns. Highlight all the common nouns and demonstrate how you can change to proper nouns using the features of the word processor. (Note: The paragraph can also relate to specific content they might be studying - example with Solar System study.) Paragraph can also be modified depending on interest and reading ability.

The man flew to the planet in a rocket. On the way he saw big stars and another planet. They went through a galaxy. He saw the sun. He knew it was made up of gas.

Guided Practice/Lead and Test

Checking for understanding (recognition to recall) Multiple means of expression
Example: Some students may have to identify ALL the nouns and change them. Other students may only be required to change 5 of the nouns. Other students may be given an alternative form for the story with different words. Some students may be given a word bank of options.

5.Provide another story for the students. Have them use the underline function to indicate all the common nouns. If there are enough computers, have each student work on a story. If there is only one computer have students take turns. Finally as a group, change each common noun to a proper noun.

6.Provide another short story for the students with mixed common and proper nouns, have the students use the underline feature to indicate all the common nouns.

7.Continue to have students repeat the rule when asked "Why?" or "How do you know?"

8.Have students change the common nouns to proper nouns.

Independent Practice (See above multiple means of expression)

9.Have students work independently on a fourth story. If there are enough computers each student works on the story, if not, have some students work on a worksheet version underlining the common nouns until it is their turn to work on the computer version to change the words to proper nouns. Some students could write their own story while they were waiting. Other students might work on sorting types of nouns. Some students would use word prediction to assist in their spelling. If possible a special word bank would be created for this activity.

10. Monitor students to save their own work. If time have students illustrate story.

11. Extension activity: Have students write their own ending to the story using proper nouns and underlining any common nouns they cannot change to proper nouns.

Formative Evaluation

Evaluation: The teacher will check and correct and incorrect oral responses on the checklist and in the group activity.

The teacher will check for 90% correct replacement of common to proper nouns on the story.

Criteria: 100% mastery on underlining all the common nouns in the story.
90% mastery for converting all the common nouns to proper nouns.
