Skills for EDEX 750
In order to meet the course objectives the students will perform a variety of technology skills:
A. Basic computer and software operations:
á use each hardware platform and operating system (Windows and Mac) to install and operate software;
á develop competency in one of the operating systems to use productivity programs and manage personal data files;
á locate software using the WWW, software catalogs, and journals;
á compare software pricing, documentation, hardware requirements, and packaging;
á evaluate software related to instructional objectives and Universal Design principles; and
á develop lessons that incorporate instructional software.
B. Productivity Skills:
á use a word processor to complete any written work and format documents;
á use a word processor to enhance language arts skills for students;
á understand the use of a database and spreadsheet for teacher record keeping;
á develop database activities to enhance curriculum objectives;
á develop spreadsheet activities including charts or graphs to enhance curriculum objectives;
á understand the differences between word processors, graphics packages, art programs, and desktop publishing tools and when each would be useful;
á use a word processing or desktop publishing package to complete a booklet;
á use a graphics or art program to create a cover sheet for a booklet;
á capture copyright free images from the web to enhance a document; and
á use a digital camera to take pictures to enhance a document.
C. Telecommunications and Multimedia
á browse laserdiscs & create barcodes for group instruction;
á use electronic mail to communicate with peers;
á use the World Wide Web to locate content information and student resource material;
á evaluate Web pages based on content and Universal Design features,
á develop lessons that are enhanced by use of the World Wide Web;
á explain the rationale for subscribing to a listserv or bulletin board;
á locate and use web-based teacher tools,
á use a multimedia authoring to develop and present a concept to a group; and
á describe the use of a multimedia authoring or presentation program to enhance and extend a curriculum lesson.
D. Assistive Technology
á create an overlay for an assistive keyboard or adapted activity;
á use adapted keyboards or switches to operate software;
á present the pros and cons of various assistive devices; and
á describe how programs operate with a Single Switch.
