The Department of Physical Education offers the Ph.D degree
in physical education and 3 different masters degrees. Each
degree is briefly described in this section. More specifics
about each degree (required courses, admission criteria, and
degree requirements) are presented under the link to each
degree.
Ph.D. in Physical
Education
The Ph.D in Physical Education is designed to prepare individuals
to enter academic positions in teacher education in physical
education and motor behavior at colleges and universities.
Students in this program are expected to develop research
skills necessary to be successful in developing an independent
line of research upon completion of the program. Click the

Masters of Arts
in Teaching
The master of arts in teaching is designed as an initial certification
degree in teacher education in physical education for individuals
who possess an undergraduate degree but do not have certification

Interdisciplinary Master of Arts (in Physical Education)
The I.M.A. degree is designed for certified teachers. Course
work and experiences are designed to develop the knowledge
and skills necessary for students to become "master teachers".
Course work extends the student's knowledge of the teaching
and learning process, develops advanced curriculum and instructional
skills, and enhances the abilities to analyze instruction.
Many students complete the I.M.A. Degree on a part time basis.

Master of Science in Physical Education
The master of science degree in physical education is designed
to develop theoretical knowledge in motor behavior and/or
pedagogy and introductory research skills. All students take
a common core of research courses and choose an area of emphasis
in motor behavior or pedagogy for additional courses. Click
