UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA

Information for specific audiences:

Karen French, Ph.D.

Welcome from the Chair

Thank you for your interest in our department; we believe we are among the best in the world for what we do and I'd like to cover a few highlights before encouraging you to navigate around our pages. After you have looked us over, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me, or any of our faculty by email, mail, or telephone. We are constantly striving to improve our ability to shape the future of our respective fields, and we believe you have a role to play in shaping that future, too.

Our programs serve a variety of students within the university. We offer undergraduate degrees in teacher certification and athletic training, three masters degrees and a doctorate in physical education. We also offer a minor in athletic coaching and numerous physical activity classes for students all across the university.

As you look through our pages, I hope you'll get a sense of the breadth of what we have to offer. Perhaps a less visible attribute of our programs is our commitment to students. Most of our classes are small and students have the opportunity to work closely with nationally known faculty in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings. Faculty members serve as academic advisors to students in all programs. We also have two student clubs (Athletic Training Club and PE Majors Club) that are sponsored by faculty members. Each club provides extra opportunities for students to develop leadership skills, interact with professionals in the field, and to serve the community.

The University of South Carolina has some of the best facilities in the nation. Our department is housed in the Blatt Physical Education Center. Athletic training students also work in Williams Brice Football Stadium, the Carolina Center, the Spring Sports Center, the new Strom Thurmond Fitness Center, numerous local clinics and high schools and local colleges.

I want you to reach your professional goals. If you are successful, I believe we will all be better for your success. If you think you are up to the challenge of making this world a better place, join us and together we can do more.

Chairperson, Karen French, Ph.D.
